Garage Standard Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; Representative Director: Toshizumi Hotta) operates "roomap," a real estate service specializing in the Shonan and Kamakura areas. The company conducted a survey on "lifestyle and work style" with 358 residents, primarily in their 20s and 30s, living in the Shonan region.
Shonan, which combines excellent access to central Tokyo with abundant natural beauty, has long been noted as a "dream neighborhood." This survey reveals the real-life picture of how younger generations live, work, and enjoy their daily lives in Shonan.
[Survey Overview]

- Survey Period: August 14, 2025 – August 21, 2025
- Survey Target: Residents in their 20s and 30s living in the Shonan and Kamakura areas, Kanagawa Prefecture
- Valid Responses: 358 people
- Survey Method: Online survey
- Survey Organization: Garage Standard Co., Ltd. (roomap operator)
[Q1] Work Styles Among 20s-30s: "Company Employees" Account for Over Half
Among respondents, "company employee" was the most common at 55.9%, followed by "part-time/temporary worker" (17.3%) and "student" (7.5%). With respondents primarily in their 20s and 30s, Shonan life emerges as a place where people "enjoy life while working."
[Q2] Work Styles Center on "Daily Office Commuting," Though Flexible Work Arrangements Are Expanding
While "daily office commuting" was the most common at 58.8%, "full remote work" (10.7%) and "hybrid work" (18.7%) also account for approximately 30%. Among 20s-30s residents in Shonan, a reality emerges of diverse work styles being adopted while taking advantage of access to central Tokyo.
[Q3] Changes After Moving to Shonan: "Time Management," "Diet," and "Social Connections"
38.8% of respondents reported waking up during the 6 o'clock hour, the highest percentage. This was followed by the 7 o'clock hour (22.3%) and the 5 o'clock hour (18.4%), revealing that over 80% of respondents wake up by 7 a.m.
This can be considered a characteristic of 20s-30s individuals who choose lifestyles that take advantage of the natural environment. In environments near the ocean and nature, "morning activities" such as morning walks or surfing tend to become incorporated into daily life, and a trend toward earlier wake-up times may be observed.
Rather than the "late waking" often seen in urban areas, Shonan living is characterized by "early rising aligned with nature" becoming the mainstream.
Additionally, many people reported positive changes in their lifestyle: "the way I spend time outside work hours has changed" (14.0%), "the frequency of home-cooked meals has increased" (14.2%), and "social connections have increased" (12.0%). One in three residents report that living in Shonan has made their lifestyle "richer."
[Q4] Shonan-Style Morning Routines: Starting the Day with "Walks and Cafés"
Shonan-characteristic morning habits have taken root, including "walks or jogging along the coast" (15.6%), "morning at a café or bakery" (14.8%), and "coffee on the balcony" (12.0%). The style of beginning the day while feeling the ocean and nature symbolizes a new lifestyle for 20s-30s individuals.
[Q5] Half Say "Living in Harmony with Nature" Represents Shonan's Character
"Being able to live in harmony with nature" ranked first at 50.6%, followed by "being able to adjust lifestyle to seasons and weather" (22.6%) and "achieving work-life balance" (18.7%). For younger generations, Shonan stands out as a "place that fulfills a lifestyle based on nature."
[Q6] 1 in 3 People Experience "Changes in Lifestyle and Work Style"
Combining "significantly changed" (17.6%) and "somewhat changed" (20.7%) results in 38.3%. Many respondents also reported being able to use their time "in a way that feels more authentically theirs," indicating that Shonan living has a positive impact on work-life balance.
[Considerations]
This survey reveals that 20s-30s residents of Shonan value "incorporating ease into daily life while feeling nature close by" over dramatic change.
As evidenced particularly in "morning routines" and "work styles," people incorporate a "comfortable rhythm" into their lives—difficult to find in urban areas—by taking walks along the beach before work or enjoying morning coffee at local cafés.
For younger generations, Shonan is "a place to work authentically while living naturally." It is supported not merely as a choice of residence, but as a choice of lifestyle itself.
